In order to ensure the safety of passengers and other road participants, risk assessment is essential in both the development of safety-critical systems as well as the assessment of incidents in the field. For the risk assessment of mechanical components, established methods, for example the estimation of failure due to wear, already exist. As for systems consisting of hardware and software, the established methods are only partially applicable.
In a current project, the AQI is investigating the risks arising from the networking of vehicles with each other and with the surrounding infrastructure and extending the risk assessment to include consideration of vehicle networking.
In addition, the AQI has analysed the most important internationally used risk assessment standards (RAPEX, NHTSA, AQSIQ and ACCC) and developed a framework for the comparability of these standards.
